Alberta is becoming a wave and whitewater destination that will:

  • Capture some of the $60 billion annual expenditure on wave tourism(1,2)

  • Create high profile traditional media, social media, and Alberta marketing opportunities

  • Offer family friendly and carbon neutral experiences for Albertans

  • Provide less than 1 year to 3 year return on investment while generating more than a millions a year in economic activity.

Albertan governments, individuals, companies, and not for profits can have a big, visible, and short turn around impact on Alberta with a small additional investment.

Wave projects

Waves from around the world

This is a small selection of existing adjustable recreational river features. Methods of adjustment include hydraulics, pneumatics, manual hoists, sandbag placement, bolting attachments, stop logs, and more. These waves are very low risk, over decades of use with tens of millions of user hours there has been one death and minimal injuries. The information shown is river feature name, country of location, and year of construction.

Economic impacts

Economic impacts are detailed in our Alberta is becoming a wave and whitewater destination document. Key points are:

  • There is so much demand for good recreational river waves that it is

    impossible to exceed the demand.

  • If all current projects are completed, there would be over $14,000,000 a year in wave related economic activity.
